This article about loons in Northern Wisconsin appeared this morning on WXPR’s web page. It seems that the loon population has declined by 20% in the last 30 years. Not good news! It’s hard to imagine Lake of the Falls without our loons calling on summer nights. The study cited lists several possible reasons for the decline, but the bottom line for lake residents is that the most helpful thing we can do to protect our loons (and our eagles, herons, etc.) is to stop using lead tackle when we go out fishing.
